18th or early 19th century Century Chinese bronze "les mudra" statue of the Buddha sitting in the lotus position. He holds his right hand downward in the earth-touching gesture (bhumisparsha mudra) with which he calls the earth goddess to affirm that he is entitled to attain enlightenment following his triumph over Mara, the destroyer.

Made using the ancient loss wax process whereby the figure is first made from wax, a clay mould is made around the wax, the wax melted poured out and then the cavity replaced my molten bronze.

The statue would once have been completely gilded in gold and still has some of the remains of this. In excellent condition with lovely patina.
